I ask the same sort of questions about the US Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. If it was about “states rights”, and NOT slavery, to the Confederacy, how was the Jim Crow system able to go into place so fast and endure for 100 more years after slavery?
If a system based on white supremacy can last that long after the abolition of slavery then the public seems to have misunderstood why it happened. Which makes it clear the level of hate that existed towards the black community.
NOW, 60 years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, we see continued racism, social and systemic (working together), and multiple other bigotries being treated like “unsettled” topics (like still having to explain to grown ass men why lying about migrant crimes that don’t exist is racist).
This tells me that people didn’t learn what we were suppose to learn from these parts of our history and so I ask this question: Do you people think we ended segregation just because it wasn’t popular anymore? Because people just thought it was impolite?
Because the way I hear people like MFL justify why LGBTQIA topics should stay out of school and classroom discussions and libraries or why it’s wrong for teachers to teach kids about racial sensitivity (even after incidents of publicly displayed racism)-
They use the same excuses that were used by the white parents who hatefully protested against de-segregation when Ruby Bridges first walked to school escorted by 2 US Marshals. If that much hate still existed after 100 years, what makes people think it isn’t still motivating racism today?
Because I truly believe that if there were any sort of visual way to identify LGBTQIA kids then there would be court cases arguing that anti-segregation laws are unconstitutional, or don’t apply in that case.
I see no fundamental difference between white parents saying it violates their parental rights to SEE black kids in the same room as their child, and straight cis parents saying the same thing if they HEAR kids who are LGBTQIA relay their point of view to the straight cis kids in classrooms.
People ask why progressive liberals are so mad all the time… It’s because we don’t want to still be wasting our time on these topics 20 years from now when we should settled them and passed the lessons on decades ago, at least.
